Scandinavian engineering keeps it simple

The infrastructure and oil and gas industries are experiencing continual growth and change on an international scale. Large infrastructure projects are in the pipeline, plus the development of oil and gas sites in Norway and Denmark, mean it is imperative the building materials used to help construct these huge structures hit the mark in terms of simplicity, quality and safety. With this in mind, how important is it to use simple systems to create complex scaffolding structures?

Utilizing a scaffolding system for complex structures such as power plants and oil refineries is no easy feat, particularly as these are some of the world’s most controlled zones where safety is of paramount importance. These high-level projects not only require fast deliverables to get the job completed on time, there are lengthy processes which need to be followed to ensure the project is delivered to exacting standards. Specifications, approvals, insurances and logistics are par for the course, which means projects need solutions that streamline the construction process and save time and avoidable costs right through the process.

Designing temporary access systems

The demands and pressures of a complex project do not have to weigh heavy on its supply chain however, as there are measures which can be adopted to keep things simple. Let’s take an oil refinery in the North Sea. Subcontractors need to have access to parts of the site which can be potentially hazardous, meaning they require temporary access or scaffolding to reach heights they otherwise wouldn’t be able to.

But in order to assure safety these systems must be well-planned prior to temporary works, to engineer safe and effective solutions that allow maximum efficiency once the project commences. The accuracy and speed of HAKI’s designs using its HAKI BIM tool enables clients to achieve just that. It is completely unique in the construction industry and sets the company apart from its competitors.

HAKI provides preliminary and initial drawings of concepts that enable works to be carried out in safe conditions. Using HAKI BIM and other design tools, these can then be accurately assessed and developed to brief to ensure all bases are covered. HAKI’s technical teams, who are experts in their fields, then drive the projects forward, working closely with the products to determine the perfect solutions for the most complex of structures.

Getting to grips with the mechanisms

Due to the demands of complex projects, HAKI understands speed and adaptability are essential in completing high volumes of scaffolding in tight timeframes. It is why HAKI developed its system to be up to 60% faster than traditional tube and fitting and 30% quicker than other modular systems, whilst retaining the safest methods of scaffold assembly. Unlike alternative products on the market, with a HAKI Universal system – which is used on a wealth of large projects – there are up to 25% less components.

The unique load-bearing ledger beam central to the Universal system allows for off-node connections to be made easily, which is particularly useful in environments like oil and gas, where access needs to work-around existing infrastructure and pipework. Universal scaffolds can also be rotated by up to 14° on plan at each standard to create more complex circular structures.

Using the simple ‘hook-on’ erection method, there are no loose or small fittings and minimal moving parts to the structure. This aspect reduces the risk of component displacement and subsequently protects the workers from injury. It is a perfect example of an understated design which assures safety and is simple to use.

HAKI also understands that products have to be tailored to a project with simplicity in mind. It’s why the company has a dedicated team innovating solutions for more challenging sectors. For example, the HAKI Bridge System (HBS), has been developed to provide safe temporary rail, road or river crossings whilst infrastructure projects are underway. The system also minimises possession times through quick deployment methods. It’s products like this, combined with the Universal system, HAKI stair towers and temporary roofs, that enables the business to provide tailored solutions to large-scale projects.

Technology streamlines delivery

In order to further streamline project delivery, digital solutions are going some way to ensuring we give our customers the best service. Our digital solutions such as HAKI BIM, the HAKI mobile app and HAKI Playground are helping our customers in ways never thought previously; enabling risks to be omitted in the design stage and site deliveries to be scheduled at appropriate times.

Our team and external partners utilise 3D scaffold models and drawings of complex structures using the HAKI BIM add-in to Autodesk Revit®. This BIM tool enables the 3D models, drawings and quantification to be shared with all relevant stakeholders via one single link, which opens contents in Autodesk Viewer. This level of transparency enables quicker, more informed decision-making, and ensures even the most complex of tasks are not made more complicated.

With a Universal product range which speaks the simplicity of Nordic design, and technological solutions which drive efficiency and safety, HAKI ensures all bases are covered on large-scale scaffolding projects.
